DCRC’s Top 10 Highlights from this past year!

Hello friends of DCRC,

It has been a very busy, exciting, and powerful year for promoting resilience.  Please read our Kick off to 2014 Letter from the Director written by Paul LeBuffe.

Below are some of our favorite happenings, events, and announcements from the past year.  We hope you will take the time to catch up on anything you missed!  Happy 2014 to all.

1. Celebration of Children’s Resilience:  DCRC hosted policymakers and national thought leaders for an event that brought together leaders from a variety of disciplines—all with one focus: Promoting children’s resilience!   Press Release and Video Montage

2. Awards and Newsworthy Happenings!  Several newsworthy events were captured this year by various news outlets.

* Center for Children’s Initiatives honors DCRC with a Children’s Champion award!

* Building Your Bounce in the news… The United Press International (UPI) picked up one of our pieces on Adult Resilience!

* NAEYC’s family site picked up one of pieces about not rushing children; “The Hurry-up Button”.

* Early Care and Education Professionals in Plattsburgh, NY get excited about Resilience in a workshop with one of our authors.

* Akron, OH DECA Users make a video of their experiences!

* Researchers from North Texas University publish an article in Children and Youth Services Review that references our resilience assessments and resources.

* Head Start study of over 1800 children uses DECA and finds “…strength-based screeners can inform interventions that improve protective factors and may reduce behavioral problems in at-risk preschool populations.”

* In the Harvard Family Research Project Newsletter, a project from Kansas City, MO uses DECA to help parents learn to use data to inform decisions and interventions!

 3. DECA Preschool Program Second Edition Launch Events: Where 2012 brought the publication of the DECA-Preschool 2nd edition, 2013 brought national professional development events around the best practice implementation of these resources to several communities across the country.  We offer many options for professional development on the revised DECA Preschool Program and other topics related to social/emotional health and resilience in children including webinars, live trainings, technical assistance, and national events.  Take a look at a listing of our 2014 National professional development events or contact Debi Mahler, Director of Professional Development, at dmahler@devereux.org for information on scheduling a training in your community!

4. New School-age Publishing Partner:  The Devereux Student Strengths Assessment Comprehensive System is now being published by Apperson, Inc.!  More to come on this exciting endeavor and partnership soon!  Preschool resources will still be published by Kaplan Early Learning Company.

 5. DCRC Partners with National Head Start Association to Promote Adult Resilience: DCRC and NHSA have committed to working together around the important focus on adult resilience. View the recorded webinars (Part 1 and Part 2) on this important topic and please stay tuned for additional joint partnership activities in the coming year.

 6. International Presence! Both the DECA and DESSA are now being published in Europe through Hogrefe.  In addition, the DECA will be used in several countries across the globe by Aflatoun, one of the world’s top Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), to evaluate their practices to promote children’s success.

7. New Resources:  DCRCs FREE webinar series was an overwhelming success and will be featured again in a 2014 webinar series.   Classroom Moments video downloads were also made available and have been a popular addition to our resource line up.  And, we have new FLIP IT resources available!

8. Staff Recognition:  We are proud that DCRC team members have been asked to lead keynote sessions and participate in advisory boards and work groups that focus on increasing awareness about the importance of resilience.

DCRC staff members serve on:

* Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL)’s research advisory board

* National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)’s Consulting Editor’s for Young Children Magazine

* National Association of Social Workers (NASW)’s Research board

DCRC Staff have delivered the following preconference sessions, key note addresses, and featured sessions this past year:

* National Head Start Association 30th Annual Parent Conference and Family Engagement Institute

* National Head Start Association Fall Leadership Institute

* NAEYC’s National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development

* Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children

* Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children

9. DCRC’s Child Welfare Initiative Grows: DCRC’s Your Journey Together curriculum is being used to help families involved in child welfare bounce back in Delaware.  It is the curriculum of choice for the Children and Families First Parent Aide Program, funded by the Delaware Division of Families Services.  The Devereux Adult Resilience Survey (DARS) is being used in Florida’s lead child welfare agency in Circuit 10 Florida as part of the foster parent licensing home study requirement.  Check our website for updates on this growing initiative!
