Building Your Bounce: No Act of Kindness is Too Small

by Susan Damico, Assistant Director of DCRC

Be kindIf you are like me, you have way too many emails to read.  And, if you are like me, you delete as many as possible because it is not possible to find the time to read each one.  The forwarded emails from my well-intentioned relatives go right to the trash… there just simply are not enough hours in the day.  So, when a colleague sent me an email recently that was in the category of “this is not mandatory, but recommended reading”, I was very tempted to ignore it.  Thankfully I resisted and it is now the email that I hope each of you will take the time to read.  (The link will be at the end of this article, so keep reading!)

The article by Dr. Robert Brooks reminds us that how we view our influence on other people can drastically change the way that we lead our lives.    We can see ourselves as just one person on this very large, densely populated planet who has little impact on a global scale.  Or, we can see ourselves as having the opportunity to make a positive difference in this world with each and every interaction we have with others.    While on a global scale the positive impact may seem minor, on a micro level, the impact can be quite powerful.  Reading this article, I hope, will remind you of the power of every interaction that you have with people everyday. As with most anything, it is important to take the time to reflect and re-commit to practices that we know are important, but sometimes lose priority in our hectic schedules.

After I finished reading the article, the FedEx delivery man knocked on my door to request a signature for some packages.  It was a 90+degree hot day and so I offered him a bottle of water.  The look of appreciation on his face was truly heartwarming and honestly, I am not sure that I would have thought to make this small gesture if it had not been for just having read the following article.  Again, sometimes we just need to be reminded that “No Act of Kindness is Too Small”.
